Chapter 17.2 Flashcards
immunity brought about by protective molecules: antibodies
humoral immunity
what are we producing antibodies for?
antigens
where do B lymphocytes work in the humoral immunity?
extracellular space
what happens in the extracellular space via B lymphocytes?
removes viruses, bacteria, and toxins by recognizing antigens and making specific antibodies
where do B lymphocytes come from?
red bone marrow
what secretes the antibodies?
plasma cells
what types of antibodies are attached to B cell?
IgM or IgD
responds to intracelular antigen
cell mediated immunity
who works in cell mediated immunity?
T lymphocytes (T cells)
What happens with T cells?
recognize antigenic peptide after macrophage processing
chemical messengers that mediate interactions between cells
cytokines
Definition: We need to activate B cells to produce plasma cells and memory cells
clonal expansion
in mammalian cells that are a “self” marker
major histocompatability complex (MHC)
you need an antigen presented with your MCH2 and show to the T helper cell
T helper cell then produces cytokines that activate the B cell
T-dependent antigens
stimulate the B cell to make Abs
T-independent antigens
