3.1.2 CIA Demonstration: Magnesium and Dry Ice Flashcards
1
Q
redox reaction
A
- Magnesium readily combines with oxygen in a redox reaction, and will even pull oxygen out of carbon dioxide.
- The balanced chemical equation for this chemical reaction relates the amount of reactants consumed to the amount of products produced

Q
CIA Demonstration: Magnesium and Dry Ice
A
- Magnesium readily combines with oxygen in a redox reaction.
- If elemental oxygen (O2) is not available, magnesium will react with the oxygen in dry ice (CO2, solid).
- The products of this chemical reaction are magnesium oxide (MgO, solid) and graphite (C, solid).
- The balanced chemical equation for this chemical reaction relates the amount of reactants consumed to the amount of products produced.
- For every two moles of magnesium (Mg) consumed, one mole of carbon dioxide (CO2) is also consumed, producing two moles of magnesium oxide (MgO) and one mole of graphite (C).
