- Dilution is a technique for making a less concentrated solution by adding solvent to a given amount of a more concentrated solution.
- For example, suppose an experiment calls for the dilution of 20.00 mL of an aqueous solution to a final volume of 250.0 mL.
- First, 20.00 mL of the solution is transferred using a 20.00 mL volumetric pipette from the starting solution (the beaker) to a volumetric flask. A volumetric flask is a flask used to measure a specific volume of liquid. In this example, a 250.0 mL volumetric flask is used.
- Water is then added to the solution a little at a time to allow the solution to be properly mixed. When the meniscus of the water is near the fill line of the volumetric flask, a disposable pipette is used to bring the water precisely to the fill line.
- Once the bottom of the meniscus is at the fill line, the flask is stoppered and inverted to mix the solution.
- If the volumetric flask is accidentally filled past the fill line, a new dilution must be made.
