pop.
all of the organisms in the SAME place at the SAME time that can reproduce together
pop density
the # of individuals/area
pop distribution
the PATTERN in which organisms of a population are spread throughout the range
Clumped, uniform, and random distribution
Clumped: gather in large groups
Uniform: Resources are SCARCE and as a result species are very TERRITORIAL
Random: spread out
Why populations might be in either of the three distribution patterns
Uniform: endangered
Random: dif location/spread
Clumped: live together in their comfortable environment
Calculate population density
of individuals/Area
Set up and calculate population size using quadrats
- look and find area = square quadrant (ex: 2m x 2m)
- look for seg. (row)
- add all ind
Equation:
total ind(size)/(area of quadrant)(seg) = estimated size(ind)/area range (ex: 100m^2)
Set up and calculate population size using mark and recapture
pop size:
# of individuals/Area or vol occupied
Mark and recapture:
total # marked/total pop size = # marked in recapture/total capture
Predict the population density and distribution of a specific species
