SG 2.4 Flashcards
(6 cards)
London dispersion
the weakest intermolecular force
Dipole-dipole
attractive forces between the positive end of one polar molecule and the negative end of another polar molecule.
Hydrogen bonds
an intermolecular force (IMF) that forms a special type of dipole-dipole attraction when a hydrogen atom bonded to a strongly electronegative atom exists in the vicinity of another electronegative atom with a lone pair of electrons.
Determine whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar based on its structure
If the arrangement is symmetrical and the arrows are of equal length, the molecule is nonpolar.
Determine what type of intermolecular attractions a particular molecule will be able to form based on its structure
looking at the Lewis structure
Determine whether a molecule will be soluble in water based on its structure
Molecules with fewer than 4-5 C atoms per hydrogen bonding group will likely be soluble in water
