What does the absorption addiction model link?
It links the levels of parasocial relationships with poor psychological health and deficiences in their own life e.g having a low self-esteem
What can a personal crisis or stressful life event trigger?
It can trigger someone to move from entertainment social to more intense involvement with worshipping celebrities
Why do people worship celebrities after a stressful life event?
It allows them to escape from reality and gives individuals a sense of fulfillment
What is absorption?
It is where an individual focuses their attention on the celebrity, rather than having to think about their own life and identify with the celebrity
What does absorption give the individual?
It gives the individual a sense of identity
What is the addiction part of the model?
Where the obsession becomes similar to a physiological addiction to a substance
What does the individual need to increase?
They need to increase their ‘dose’ in order to gain satisfaction
What can the indivudual needing to increase their dose lead to?
It can lead to more extreme behaviours and delusional thinking, as the individual moves through the levels of parasocial relationships
What does McCutchson. theory recognise a correlation between?
It recognises a correlation between poor psychological health and the level of parasocial relationships
