What is a parasocial relationship?
Parasocial relationships are one sided, unreciprocated relationships where one person extends emotional energy, interest and time while the other person is completely unaware of their existence e.g a celebrity

What is the celebrity attitude scale?
It is a questionnaire that identifies three levels of parasocial relationships
What does each level describe?
It describes the attitudes and behaviours at each level.
What happens as the level increases?
The intensity of the parasocial relationship and celebrity worship increases
What is the first level of parasocial relationships?
The entertainment social level which is the least intense
What are celebrities viewed as in the entertainment social stage?
They are viewed as sources of entertainment and individuals may speak about them often with friends for social interaction
What does a person in the entertainment social level keep up with?
They keep up on the activities of celebrities for the purpose of entertainment
What is the second level of parasocial relationships?
Intense personal which is the intermediate level
What does a person have for a celebrity in the intense personal level?
They have strong feelings for a celebrity and may appear obsessed with them
Are the persons feelings for a celebrity the same as they would be for a real person in the intense personal level?
Their feelings for the celebrity are just as they would be for a real person
What is an example of someone in a parasocial relationship at the intense personal level?
A fan of Harry Styles may have frequent obsessive thoughts and intense feelings about him
What is the last level of parasocial relationships?
Borderline pathological which is the strongest level
What do individuals have in the borderline pathological level?
They have uncontrollable fantasies and displays extreme behaviours towards that celebrity
What type of behaviours do individuals in the borderline pathological level?
They show addictive behaviours towards a celebrity
What may individuals do in attempt to meeting and befriending the celebrity in the borderline pathological level?
They may spend a lot of time and money
What are some examples of individuals spending a lot of time and money to meet celebrities in the borderline pathological stage?
They may spend a large sum of money on a celebrity related object, send them personal gifts and may be willing to perform illegal action if the celebrity told them to
