What is self-disclosure?
It is where individuals reveal personal information about themselves
What does the hyper-personal model of self-disclosure in virtual relationships argue?
It argues that self-disclosure is more likely to occur in virtual relationships than face-to-face relationships
What does high levels of excitement at the start of these relationships lead to?
High levels of excitement leads to self-disclosure occuring a lot quicker than in face-to-face relationships
What does self-disclosure happening a lot quicker lead to?
It leads to virtual relationships becoming a lot more intimate, a lot sooner
What is selective self-presentation?
In virtual relationships people have a lot more control over their online image compared to their relationships in the real world
How can people present themselves online?
They can present themselves in an ideal way by manipulating their self-image
What does the reciever gain?
They gain a positive impression and may give feedback e.g respond to or like a post, that positively reinforces the senders selective self-presentation and leads to greater self disclosure
What is anonymity?
When others are unaware of your identity the hyper-personal model argues that individuals are more likely to disclose personal information
Why are people more likely to disclose personal information when others are unaware of their identity?
They feel less accountable which leads to feelings of closeness and intimacy
