What is a strengh of Duck’s model of relationship breakdown?
It has led to practical applications
What are the principles of Duck’s theory that has led to the prac app?
The principles of the theory that relationships breakdown following on from the first two phases (intra-psychic and dyadic) of Duck’s model has led to a prevention model for relationship counselling to repair relationships before the actual break up
What does the counseller encourage in relationship counselling?
They encourage an open and calm discussion in the dyadic phase and focus on the more positive aspects of the partner in the intra-psychic phase
What can relationship counselling bring?
It can bring stability to the relationship and prevent relationship breakups in the real world
What is a limitation about the phases of relationship breakdown?
The phases are criticised for being too rigid
Why are the stages in Duck’s model to rigid?
They are too rigid because not every person goes through each phase in the order set out by the model, it is possible that many can skip from the intrapsychic stage to the grave dressing stage
What is an example of a person skipping from the intra-psychic stage to the grave dressing stage which suggests the phases are too rigid?
A person may be happy in their relationship but then it immediately breaks down due to infidelity. In this case an individual would skip the first two phases and thresholds straight to ending the relationship not following the phases in a linear order
What is a criticism of Duck’s phase model?
It can be criticised for lacking cultural relativism
Why does Duck’s phase model lack cultural relativism?
Much of the research is carried out in Western cultures
Why is the research being conducted in western cultures a limitation?
Relationships in individualistic cultures are generally voluntary and often come to an end in divorce
What are relationships like in collectivist cultures?
They are more likely to be compulsory, less easy to end, and involve wider family. For example, they will speak to their family about a problem before their partner
Why are Duck’s phase model not applicable to all relationships across all cultures?
Due to their different norms and values, lowering the external validity of the theory
