What is the definition of achievement motivation?
An individuals drive to succeed for its own sake
What are the two personality factors?
Need to achieve (NACH)
Need to avoid failure (NAF)

Task difficultly/ probability of success

What does NACH mean?
A person is motivated to achieve success for feelings of pride and satisfaction
What does NAF mean?
A person is motivated to avoid failure in order not to experienced feelings of shame or humiliation that will result if failure occurs

Completes tasks quickly
What are characteristics of NAF?
Avoids challenges
Gives up easily
Dislikes feedback
Takes time to complete tasks
What is the task difficulty/probability of success?
The probability of success or failure in the task
What is the incentive value of success?
The importance of the individual of success or failure in the task.

High
If the probability of success is high the incentive is?
Low
What task does Someone with high NACH take?
50/50 chance
What task does someone take with high NAF?
When there is high level of success or low level of failure
What do high achievers tend to have?
High levels of NACH and low levels of NAF
What do low achievers tend to have?
Low levels of NACH and high wels of NAF
What is avoidance behaviour?
People with low NAF dominance, avoid situations where they may be evaluated to protect self-esteem.
What is approach behaviour?
People who attempt challenging situations even if they might fail.
How could a coach chance someone from NAF to NACH?
Using positive reinforcement
Gradually increasing the task difficulty
Trying not to put low achievers into situations where there could be be failure
