What is the definition of motivation?
Internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour.
What is internal motivation?
Motivation from within the performer and is an inner drive. Feeling of pride and satisfaction at having completed a task
What is external motivation?
Motivation that comes from an outside source. Coach, can be tangible or intangible rewards
What are examples of tangible rewards?
Trophies
Medals
Badges
Money
Certificates
What are examples of intangible rewards?
Clapping
Approval
Positive comments
Beating personal best
National recognition
What could happen if there is too much emphasis on external rewards?
Loss in value and incentive
What can extrinsic rewards do to a performer?
Place pressure on players to get a reward and lead to cheating
What are disadvantages of extrinsic motivation?
Too much pressure
Loss of motivation
Become dependant on extrinsic motivation
Could become worthless
What are the 4 main motives?
Physical well being
Psychological well being
Improvement of performance
Assertive achievement
What does the exam board want to hear as the motives?
Physical, emotional, social, psychological wellbeing and health
How does age and gender affect motivation?
Older people are more motivated by psychological well being than younger people. Males are more motivated by assertive achievement than females.
What is optimum motivation?
Needing to perform at your best
What factors affect optimum motivation?
Success, coach behaviour, arousal levels, appropriate goals/targets and challenges
