What is the definition of stress?
A pattering of negative physiological states and psychological responses occurring in situations where people perceive threats to their well being, which they may be unable to meet.
What is eustress?
Positive and gives a feeling of fulfilment and arousal, it can increase focus, attention and skill level.
What is distress?
Negative form of stress and in extreme cases causes anxiety and apprehension - detrimental to sporting performance

What is Selye theory of stress?
General adaption syndrome
What are the stages of the general adaption syndrome?
Alarm reaction stage
Resistance stage
Exhaustion/collapse stage
What is the alarm reaction stage?
Fight or flight - sympathetic nervous system, increases heart rate, blood sugar, blood pressure adrenaline
What is the resistance stage?
Is stress continues the body will revert to its normal levels, homeostasis regained
What is the exhaustion/collapse stage?
Adrenal cortex fails after continued stress - ulcers, CHD, high blood pressure, extreme cause - death
How can you control anxiety and stress?
Help with the appropriate methods for controlling their form of anxiety.

Replace negative thought to control anxiety?

Persuade the body that the stressor does not exist

The process of creating a mental image of what you want to happen or feel.

Developing positive thoughts about one’s actions

The identification of what the performer is trying to achieve at a specifies time in the future
