What is the definition of goal setting?
The identification of what the performer is trying to achieve at a specifies time in the future. Can be used to enhance performance and increase motivation
What are the two types of goals?
Outcome goal
Performance goal
What is an outcome goal?
A goal set that is concerned on the end result - win gold medal at olympics
What is a performance goal?
A goal set that is related to compare with the previous performance - a PB
Focus on a performers present standard of performance compared with their own previous performance
What does SMART stand for?
Specific
Measurable
Agreed
Realistic
Time phased
What does it mean for a goal to be specific?
If a goal is too vague then it will not help performers to focus their attention and plan their route to achieve their goal. Specific goals enable you to be able to measure your progress against each other. Specific to situation and performer
What does it mean for a goal to be measurable?
There should be a way of monoriting progress in achievement of the goal. Goals should be quantitive
What does it mean for a goal to be agreed?
Be agreed between the player and the coach
What does it mean for a goal to be realistic?
Actually possible to be achieved
What does it mean for a goal to be time phased?
There must be some identified time span for the achievement of the goal.
