Facts about Amsterdam

A

-The cultural capital of the Netherlands,a densely populated low-lying country with a growing population and minimal amount of spare land
-The dutch approach : avoid creating waste in the first place, recover the valuable raw materials from it, generating energy by incinerating residual waste, and only dump what is left, but do in an environmentally acceptable way. Known as ‘Lansink’s Ladder’.

Q

Explain the landfill in Amsterdam

A

-Increasing level of material consumption and significant lack of physical space , with environmental deterioration of the land
-There were increasing numbers of objection to waste disposal sites from public due to smell, soil pollution and groundwater contamination
-In 1995, the government introduced a landfill tax on every tonne of material landfilled. This gave companies a financial incentive to look for other methods like recycling and incineration.
-A landfill ban covering 35 waste categories was introduced in 1995
-Amount of waste sent to landfill decreased significantly in the late 90’s.
-By 2006, the country had already reached targets of the landfill directive set of 2016.

Q

Explain the AEB incineration plant

A

-Waste-to-energy
-Produces 1 million MWh of electricity annually.
-Plant is used for heating for several communities, produces 300,000 gigajoules of heat annually.
-Annually, 1.4 million tons of waste is brought to the plant. (600 trucks and one freight train per day)
-64% of the waste that ends up at the plant is recycled.
-Flue gases are scrubbed to reduce the environmental impacts.
-Avoids 438 kilotons of CO2 per year.
-AEB is next door to Waternet water treatment plant. AEB provides energy and heat for water treatment processes, the water plant injects sludge and biogas into the AEB for extra fuel sources.

Q

What is the environmental comparison ?

A

-If the equivalent amount of waste was put into landfill, the CO2 emissions yearly would be 1036 kilotons.
-Mainly a result of methane gases developing at landfill.
-If gases were captured of burned off, it would reduce emissions to 404 kilotons ( 438 kilotons saved by AEB)
