He became Tsar in 1881, aged 36 after the assassination of his father

As tsarevich since 1865 after the death of his older brother, he received education in French, English and Russian as well as military drill. His main tutor was the conservative pobedonostev who taught him the importance of the Orthodox Church and patriotism

There was increased repression of national minorities and the Russian police state expanded
What was Alexander III’s marriage like?
He married Princess Dagmar of Denmark. Together they had six children and it appeared a happy and committed relationship, unlike his father whose marriage was marked by extra marital affairs and illegitimate children
