What war was Russia involved in when Alexander II became Tsar?
Russia was fighting in the Crimean war and things were going badly for the Russian army
What were the consequences of Russia’s poor industry?
It meant that a lot of military equipment had to be imported and there were supply issues with weapons and munitions
What did the underdeveloped infrastructure lead to?
It made it very difficult to mobilise troops or transport them to the front from more distant parts of the empire there were
Describe the issues with the Russian army
Whilst it was large it was poorly trained and disciplined therefore the majority of troops were peasant conscripts who lacked skills. Language barriers and illiteracy made them difficult to train

It was a weak class which affected leadership, most officers were the younger sons of nobles who had been bought a commission so many had little to no experience or traininf
What did the Crimean war show?
Russias economic and industrial backwardness and it challenged her ‘great power’ status in Europe
Was army conscription popular?
No as if took young able bodied men away from their communities, where farming and harvesting crops was the main source of income and only source of food- this along with rent increases led to peasant uprisings
What affected the morale and motivation of troops?
The harsh military discipline and the poor conditions

Why could Russia not withdraw from the war?
If they pulled out of the war in 1855 it would have been seen as a sign of weakness, however defeat to turkey, which was seen as a lesser power, was very humiliating
By 1856 how many Russian troops were dead?
Nearly half a million. Some were lost in combat, others to disease, starvation or untreated injuries
