The incompetence of the Tsarist regime. It intensified calls for reform
What happened on Bloody Sunday?
In 1905 peaceful protestors from the Assembly of Russian Workers led by Gapon marched to the Winter Palace to present a petition to the Tsar asking for an end to the war and better working rights. They were massacred by the Tsar’s troops in St Petersburg, sparking nationwide outrage
What happened to peasant uprisings?
A wave of strikes and protests spread across the major Russian cities. In the countryside, peasant uprisings led to rural distress eg landlords homes were burned
What happened in 1905?
Sailors on the battleship Potemkin mutinied, symbolising the widespread unrest and discontent within the military
Who was Trotsky?
He emerged as leader of the St Petersburg Soviet which coordinated strikes and protests in October
What was the end to the Russo-Japanese war?
The treaty of Portsmouth- Nicholas promised to pay the soldiers and as troops moved back north west, they were able to reestablish law and order
What was the October Manifesto?
It was issued by Nicholas II and promised civil liberties and the creation of the Duma, though its powers were limited
What did the Tsarist regime crack down on revolutionaries lead to?
Arrests, executions and exile
