Anatomy 7 Flashcards

The internal thoracic (Mammary) artery is
An artery of the anterior chest wall
Intercostal Spaces .. there are
9 anterior & 11 posterior
The internal thoracic artery supplies
The skin & muscle of the anterior thoracic cage, the breast, & the superior aspect of the abdominal wall.
Origin of the internal mammary artery
The 1st part of the Subclavian Artery
The internal thoracic artery travels
Inferiorly along the the inner surface of the anterior chest wall approximately 2 cm lateral to the sternal margin.
The internal thoracic artery descends between
The internal intercostal muscle & the costal cartilage anteriorly, & the sternocostalis muscle posteriorly.
At the level of the 1st rib, the internal thoracic artery is crossed
Anteriorly by the phrenic nerve
The internal mammary artery terminates
At the 6th space, it bifurcates into the terminal branches Superior epigastric artery & Musculophrenic artery.
Branches of the Internal Thoracic Artery
1) Anterior intercostal arteries (Spaces 1-6)
2) Pericardiophrenic artery
3) Perforating cutaneous branches
4) Medial mammary branches
5) The musculophrenic artery
6) The Superior epigastric artery
The perforating cutaneous branches supply
The superior six internal intercostal muscles, pectoralis major muscles, & the overlying skin.
The medial mammary branches originate from
The 2nd to 4th spaces
The medial mammary branches supply
The tissue of the breast.
During high vascular demand (lactation), the medial mammary branches
Enlarge in diameter
Provides blood supply for the last 3 intercostal spaces (7-9)
Musculophrenic Artery
A distal continuation of the internal thoracic artery
The Superior Epigastric Artery
The superior epigastric artery supplies
The superior aspect of the rectus abdominis muscle.
In the umbilical region, the superior epigastric artery anastomoses with
The inferior epigastric artery
The intercostal arteries course through the thoracic wall between the ribs, with the exception of
The 10th & 11th intercostal spaces.
Each intercostal space is supplied by
1) A large posterior intercostal artery & its collateral branch
2) A small pair of anterior intercostal arteries
The anterior intercostal arteries… There are
9 pairs for the upper 9 intercostal spaces
In the upper 6 intercostal spaces, the anterior intercostal arteries originate from
The internal thoracic artery
In the 7th, 8th, & 9th spaces, the anterior intercostal arteries originate from
The musculophrenic artery
The anterior intercostal arteries end by
Anastomosing with the posterior intercostal artery & its collateral branch of the same space.
The anterior intercostal arteries supply
1) Intercostal muscles
2) Pectoral muscles
3) Breast & Skin
