Appropriate methods of joining Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is soft soldering?
A low-temperature joining process using a filler metal (solder) that melts below 400°C. Commonly used for joining copper pipes and electrical components.
What is brazing?
A medium-temperature joining process (above 400°C) using a brass filler rod. Used for joining metals like mild steel and copper when a stronger bond is needed than soldering.
What is welding?
A high-temperature process where two metals are fused together by melting the edges. Used for strong, permanent metal joints, e.g., in structural frames and vehicles.
What are wood adhesives used for?
To permanently bond wood surfaces together. Types include PVA glue and contact adhesives.
Name four types of wood joints.
Butt joint: simple end-to-end or edge-to-edge joint
Mitre joint: two pieces joined at an angle, usually 45°
Dowel joint: wooden rods (dowels) strengthen the joint
Housing joint: one piece has a slot (housing) for the other
What is riveting?
A method of permanently joining sheets of metal using a metal pin (rivet) hammered or compressed in place.
What is pop riveting?
A quicker form of riveting using a rivet gun to secure the rivet in place, often in sheet metal.
How are plastics permanently joined?
Using solvent welding (chemical bond), heat welding (melting edges), or adhesives designed for plastics.
What are nuts, washers, and bolts used for?
To hold parts together securely, allowing them to be dismantled later. Washers prevent damage and distribute the load.
What are machine screws?
Screws with a uniform thread used to join metal parts, usually into a tapped (threaded) hole or with a nut.
What are self-tapping screws?
Screws designed to cut their own thread into materials like metal and plastic as they’re driven in.
Name two types of woodscrews and their applications.
Countersunk: sits flush with the surface
Round-head: sits above the surface, used where appearance isn’t a concern.
What are knock-down fittings?
Pre-manufactured, easy-to-assemble and disassemble fasteners used in flat-pack furniture and temporary constructions.
