Tools and processes Flashcards
(21 cards)
Name three deforming processes.
Vacuum forming, Line bending, Metal folding
What is vacuum forming used for?
To shape thermoplastic sheets over a mould by heating and applying a vacuum. Used for trays, packaging, and product casings.
What is line bending?
A method of heating a narrow strip of thermoplastic until soft, then bending it to shape. Used for display stands and signs.
What is metal folding?
A process of bending sheet metal along a straight line, often using a folder or press brake. Used for casings, brackets, and panels.
Name four types of saws and their uses.
Tenon saw: straight cuts in wood, Coping saw: intricate curves in wood or plastic, Scroll saw: fine, detailed curves in thin materials, Hacksaw: cutting metal or plastic
Name three types of drills.
Pillar drill, Cordless drill, Hand drill
Name four types of drill bits and their applications.
Flat bit: large, rough holes in wood, Forstner bit: clean, flat-bottomed holes in wood, Countersunk bit: creates a recess for screw heads, Hole cutter: large holes in wood, plastic or thin metal
Name three types of hammers and their uses.
Claw hammer: driving and removing nails, Pin hammer: light, delicate work with small nails, Ball pein hammer: shaping metal and riveting
What is a handplane used for?
To smooth and level wooden surfaces and remove thin layers of material.
What is a wood chisel used for?
To carve or cut wood, particularly for creating joints.
Name five marking out tools.
Pencil, Steel rule, Try square, Marking gauge, Centre punch
others include: sliding bevel, scriber, bradawl, engineer’s square, odd-leg callipers, dividers, engineer’s blue
Name three types of files and their uses.
Flat file: smoothing flat surfaces, Round file: enlarging or shaping holes, Half-round file: smoothing curved and flat surfaces
What is a bandfacer/linisher used for?
To sand and smooth wood, plastics and some metals on flat or curved surfaces.
What is a pedestal polisher used for?
To polish and finish metal and plastic surfaces to a smooth, shiny finish.
What is a milling machine?
A machine tool for cutting and shaping metal or other materials using a rotating cutter.
What is a lathe used for?
To rotate material (wood or metal) against cutting tools to shape it symmetrically.
What do accuracy and tolerance mean when using tools and processes?
Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value. Tolerance is the acceptable range of variation from a specified measurement.
Name three permanent joining methods for metals.
Soft soldering, Brazing, Welding
Name four types of wood joints.
Butt joint, Mitre joint, Dowel joint, Housing joint
What is riveting and pop riveting?
Riveting joins metal parts using metal pins (rivets). Pop riveting uses a tool to secure rivets quickly, often in sheet metal work.
Name a permanent joining method for plastics.
Solvent welding — a process that chemically bonds plastic parts together using a solvent adhesive.
