Switch Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a reed switch?
A switch operated by a magnetic field, consisting of two metal reeds sealed in a glass tube.
What does the reed switch symbol look like?
A rectangle with two contacts inside that close when magnetised.
What is a push-to-make (PTM) switch?
A momentary switch that closes the circuit only while being pressed.
What is the circuit symbol for a push-to-make switch?
A break in a line with a spring-like line showing the contacts close when pressed.
What does SPST stand for?
Single Pole Single Throw switch — a simple on/off switch.
What is the SPST switch symbol?
A simple break in a single line representing open or closed contacts.
What does SPDT stand for?
Single Pole Double Throw switch — a switch that connects one input to either of two outputs.
What is the symbol for an SPDT switch?
A line connected to a pivot with two possible contacts it can connect to.
What does a toggle switch look like?
A lever that flips up or down to open or close a circuit.
What is a microswitch?
A small switch that activates with very little physical force, often with a lever or button.
What is a rocker switch?
A switch that rocks back and forth to open or close a circuit.
What is a membrane switch?
A flat, flexible switch often found in keyboards or control panels.
What is a slide switch?
A switch operated by sliding a knob from one position to another.
How do you select a switch for a circuit?
Based on the required function (momentary or maintained), current rating, and user interface.
Why would you use a push-to-make switch?
For momentary operations like doorbells or reset buttons.
Where is an SPDT switch commonly used?
To switch between two outputs from a single input, like selecting modes.
