Is there an official list of training manuals for the department?

A

Yes, the complete list may be found in Article XV, Section 1 of the Order Book. (Art XV, Sec 1)

Who develops drill standards?

A

Drills shall be based upon standards established by the Fire Chief and conducted in strict accord with methods developed by the Deputy Fire Chief Training Academy. (Art XV, Sec 2)

When are drills held? (please try not to laugh out loud when reading the answer)

A

In general, drills shall be held in sequence as listed in the Training Procedure. However with the permission of the battalion fire chief concerned, company officers may deviate from the sequence of these drills or continue drilling with any Department manual until that book is completed.
House drills shall be held on days that outside drills or inspections are not performed according to the assignment of subjects established in the Training Procedure. They shall begin at 1000 hours, but shall not be held on Sundays or holidays.
Weekly drills shall be performed according to the schedule established in the Training Procedure. (Art XV, Sec 3)

How long are drill periods?

A

Not less than two, (2) hours shall be utilized for house drills. Where necessary in the interest of the service, house drills shall be extended by the on-duty company officer.
Not less than two, (2) hours shall be utilized for weekly drills. Where necessary in the development of team work and efficient operation, on-duty company officers shall extend the drill period. (Art XV, Sec 4)

When are drills not performed?

A

No drill shall be performed

  1. On Sundays or holidays
  2. On a day when the company is performing Fire Prevention Inspection
  3. When drilling in company platoon groups at the Training Academy
  4. When the Emergency Mobilization Plan is implemented
  5. When testing hose (Art XV, Sec 5)

Do responding to alarms cancel company drills?

A

Response to, or service at, an alarm during drill period shall not cancel drill requirements however, the on-duty company officer shall use discretion if the company had served at a working alarm during any part of the drill period. (Art XV, Sec 5)
