Q

how do drugs act as inhibitory neurotransmitters.

A
  • The drug makes the post synapse less likely to fire
  • Inhibitor transmitters bind to post synaptic receptors and send a signal to the post synaptic cells making them less likely to fire the chemical signal to the post synaptic neuron
  • SUMMATION - if the inhibitory is more powerful than exhibitory it can inhibit post synaptic neuron from firing at all - decreasing overall activity

Q

difference and similarity between fMRI and ERPs

A
  • different procedures: electrical activity of neuron’s via electrodes (brainwaves) after events vs. changes in blood oxygenation prior brain activities - haemodynamic response
  • both are neurologist techniques used to gain access to cognitive processes behind brain activity

Q

split brain research study (sperry)

A
  • sperry 1960 - laterisarion of brain functioning
  • corpus callosum split due to epilepsy
  • disconnected left/ right hemisphere
  • stimuli presented to LVF -> flashing
  • LVF in charge of right hemisphere - unable to name verbally
  • RVF could name verbally (left hemisphere)

Q

evaluate sperry’s research

A
  • controlled - lab task isolate hemisphere functions - establish cause and effect
  • small, unusual sample - epilepsy
  • artificial task - flashing stimuli to one visual side (in everyday 2 visual - more complex)
