where your brain adapts and changes accordingly to what you do in your life

4
Q

what were B+C interested in

A

neurons in the visual cortex of the brain
they found you could change the way the nerons in the visual cortex alligned by controlling what kittens could see as they grew

Q

what is a visual cortex

A

part of the brain that receives and processes sensory nerve impulses from the eyes

A

when a cat puts its feet out to meet the edge of a surface

10
Q

what was the environment from 2 weeks until 5 months

A

in a striped cylinder for 5 hours a day
they wore a black collar so were only able to see vertical/horizontal stripes

15
Q

what visual deficits did the cats show

16
Q

after 10hrs in a well lit room what deficits did they recover from

A

visual placing returned to normal
startle response returned

17
Q

after 10hrs in a well lit room what deficits did they not recover from

A

clumsy
bumped into furntiutre

18
Q

how did the horizontal and vertical cats differ

A

cats descrbed as being virtually blind to opposite oreintation
found this by shaking a rod in front of the cat
cat only responded to oreintation they were in

19
Q

procedure of neurophysical test

A
  1. cats were anaesthetised and then paralysed and their eyes open
  2. electrodes were inserted into the primary visual cortex to take electrical readings from neruons
  3. visual neuron acticvity was recorded to show optimal oreintation for each neuron when shown bright slits or edges of light
20
Q

results of neurophysiological test

A

showed the visual neurons within the visual cortex had alligned themselves to match environment the kitten was brought up in
little to no neurons alligned to the opposite direction

21
Q

conclusions of BC

A

difference between the cats suggests that neurons can change their preferred orientation according to the stimulation they recieve, matching the ability of the brain to respond to features in the visual input

22
Q

what ethics for animals did BC uphold

A

replacement: no alternitve replacement to animals
reduction: reduced impact to minimum amount of cats (2)
refinement: only had cat in clydinder for 5hrs a day

23
Q

how can BC be critised in terms of ethics

A

isnt many practical applications of the research so wasnt worth harming kittens

24
Q

is ethnocentirsm appropiate to this study

25
interbal relaiblity ?
standardised and replicable due to high level of controls
26
external realiblity?
only 2 kitties used but doesnt matter as investigating bioligvcal factors
27
interbal validity?
good test of brain plasticity as only difference in procedure was the direction of stripes
28
population validity?
problem with generalising beyond the species of these kitties
29
concurrent validity?
same results proceduced from hirsch and spinelli
30
ecological valdity?
not realistic
31
how does BC link to nature nurture
nurture, brains can change in response to the visual environement
32
how does BC link to individualism/ situatiuonalism
behaviour depedent on situation of cylinder orientation
33
usefullness debate?
not usefull- based on cats not humans
34
reductionalsim/ holism?
holistic: looking at obsevable bahviour and brain sturcture reductionlist: only look into the enviornment the kitties are in
35
psychology as a science?
replicable and objective and falsifable- controlled quantitative measures
36
