what study does this link to
baron cohen
what are the 5 stages of psychosexual development
- oral
- anal
- phallio
- latency
- genital
what does oediupus complex mean
incestous feelings felt by a son to his mum and jealously felt towards a father
what does castration anxiety mean
a boys fear after seeking a naked famle for first time that he will lose his penis
whats psychoanalysis
form of therapy thats intensive and long term
aim is to allevate and distress by giving patient insight into unconcious mental processes
aims of study
provide evidence for psychosexual development theory using psychoanalysis of dreams and fantaises of a child ‘little hans’ with a nervous disorder
whats a case study method
where a small group of ppts are studied in depth
ppts unusual in some way
sample?
little hans studied from his 3rd birthing until he was 5 years
from vienna, austria
brought up with minimal force
sampling method?
self select- freud put out a call asking for friends to send their childs info
procedure?
- LETTERS: hans father recorded details of hans behaviour/convos and made his own interpretations. sent weekly
- REPLIES: freud replied with his own interpretations of the behaviours and would give guidance on what han’s father should be discussing
han’s phobia of horses biting him
how did freud interpret this
hans has concern his widdler would be cut off
hans phobia of his mum letting go of him in the bath
how did freud intepret this
arising from a death wish against his sister hanna
hans wanted his mum all to himself
what was freuds 3 conclusions
- his psychosexual stages of development theory was correct
- oedipus complex- hans wanted his father out of the way, so he could have his mum all to himself
- phobias come from the unconcious- the fear of his father finding out about his desires wa displaced into a fear horses
one advantage of the sample
freud collected lots of data about how han’s phobias developed and were then resolved by studying his case in depth
one disadvantage of sample
only studied 1 boy
difficult to generalise results to all children
hans father is friend of freud so data may be biased
one advantage of using self report
freud and hans father found out more info about hans phobias which wouldnt be possible throughout other methods
one disadvanatge of using self report
little hans father may have aske delibrately leading questions and only reported certain convos which support freuds theory
advantage of collecting qualitative data
much more detailed which provided more evidence that freud could use in support of his theory
one disadvnatage of using qualiitative data
subjective and less scientific
freud interpreted the behaviour to match his theory when there were more obvious explanations
ethnocentrism
experiences of a middle class child in austria are unlikely to be typical of children in less privledged parts of the world
internal relaiblity
wasnt standardised as hans father would just ask him questions and summerise these convos to freud
external reliability
cant assume that all children will progress through psychosexual stages of development like hans did
internal validity
simpler and obvious explanations for the behaviours shown that arent sexual and so are more accpetable
(giraffe fantasy may be bc of him going to the zoo)
population validity
focused on specific sample and so it unlikely to represent how all children develop
