brain Flashcards
(28 cards)
brainstem def
is the posterior part of the brain, it connects cerebrum with the spinal cord, it coordinates motor control signals sent from the brain to the body
brainstem parts
medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain
lobes of the brain
4 lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
frontal lobe controls
personality, behavior, emotions, judgment, planning, problem solving, speech: speaking and writing (brocas area), body movement (motor strip), intelligence, concentration, and self awareness
frontal lobe contains
most of the dopamine-sensitive neurons in the cerebral cortex
frontal lobe def
one of the 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex, located in the anterior part of the brain, largest lobe
frontal lobe regions
3 regions: prefrontal cortex, inferior frontal complex, posterior frontal cortex
prefrontal cortex
behind forehead, controls complex thought and expression
inferior frontal cortex
in between the prefrontal and posterior frontal cortex, controls smell, instincts and raw emotions
parietal lobe controls
words, interprets language, sense of touch, pain, temp (sensory strip), interprets signals from vision, hearing, motor, sensory and memory, spatial and visual perception
parietal lobe contains
neurons that receive sensory info from the skin and tongue, and processes sensory info from the ears and eyes that are recieved in other lobes
parietal lobe def
located behind the frontal lobe and above the occipital lobe, this is where information like taste, temperature and touch are processed
occipital lobe
located below the parietal lobe, controls visual processing (light, color. movement)
temporal lobe def
located on the each side of the brain (left and right side)
temporal lobe controls
auditory perception, memory, speech, emotional responses, visual perception
temporal lobe contains
the limbic system, olfactory cortex, amygdala and the hippocampus
amygdala def
located at the end of the hypothalamus and is part of the limbic system which is located in the temporal lobe, there is two of these
amygdala controls
fear, anger, pleasure (emotional response), what memories are stored and where the memories are stored in the brain
amygdala receieves
sensory info from the thalamus and cerebral cortex
hippocampus def
center of the limbic system (and part of the limbic system), it is conected to the hypothalamus by the fornix, one on each hemisphere (left and right)
hippocampus is responsible for
the transfer of memories into long-term storage
limbic system def
located on top of the brainstem in the temporal lobe, and is the center of our emotions, learning and memory
limbic system includes
the hypothalamus, amygdala, cingulate gyrus, fornix, hippocampus, olfactory cortex and the thalamus
fornix
connects the hippocampus to the hypothalamus
