Cabling Flashcards
What is twisted pair cabling?
For short and medium length connections because of lower costs compared to optical fiber.
To reduce crosstalk two insulated copper wires are twisted around each other.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Unshielded Twisted Paired (UTP) Cable?
Cheap and easy to work
Can be affected by radio interference
What is CAT1 - CAT7?
The type of UTP cable, higher numbers mean more twists in the cable so greater speeds and length
What are the characteristics of Shield Twisted Pair Cabling (STP)?
Same as UTP with a shield covering the full wire length to reduce interference
What are the characteristics of a coaxial cable?
Insulated and shielded by a braided wire. Most expensive, but least interference
What are the characteristics optic fibre?
Fibers of glass used to carry signals in the form of light over long distances. Cheaper than Coaxial
What are single mode fibers?
Transmit one signal per fiber
What are Multi-mode fibers?
Transmit many signals per fiber
