cancer Flashcards
(11 cards)
cell death (+2 types)
damaged cells dont divide and kill themselves
1. necrosis (necrophilia)
2. apoptosis
necrosis
uncontrolled cell death
due to an injury or damage that can not be repaired.
sudden burst therefore harmful
apoptosis
regulated and
controlled cell death as part of the functioning of healthy multicellular organisms.
dissolves & recycles therefore good.
cancer cell
dont gaf if theyre damaged, keep dividing.
mutation
change in cell dna bc of cell division error, environment, or virus
carcinogen
something that promotes cancer causing mutations
Cancer cells are damaging because?
- They do not stop dividing (uses energy, takes up space)
- They do not stick to other cells to form functioning tissue (do not specialize)
- They behave independently (do not listen to signals from other cells)
- They may move to other locations in the body
tumour
an abnormal mass of
tissue that forms lumps or growths
benign tumour
non-cancerous growths that grow slowly and have clear border
malignant TUMOUR
cancerous growths that spread locally or to different parts of the body (through the bloodstream)
cancer treatments etc
● Surgery: physical removal of cancer cells → used for solid tumours that are contained in a single area (benign or localized tumours)
● Chemotherapy: use of drugs to shrink or kill cancer cells → the drugs may affect non-cancerous cells throughout the body
● Radiation therapy: use of x-rays to kill cancer cells by severely damaging their DNA → may also damage the DNA of surrounding cells
● Immunotherapy: drug therapy that aims to boost your immune system function so that your immune system can naturally fight back against the cancer cells (only approved for certain types of cancer
