differentiation Flashcards
(9 cards)
why do cells divide
1) growth
2) repair
specialized cell
specific function and structure
stem cell
unspecialized can turn into specialized however it wants to
2 types of stem cells
embryonic: present in human embryos and involved in early
growth and development
adult: involved in
replacement of damaged tissue
2 types of embryonic stem cells
a) totipotent: can become a complete, viable organism (can theoretically make a clone). comes from zygote
b) Pluripotent: can become all cell types in an adult organism. comes from blastocyst
2 types of adult stem cells
a) multipotent: can become family of cell types
b) unpotent: can only become 1 cell type
sperm + egg = ?
zygote!
blastocyst
zygote keeps dividing into a bajillion little cells
tissues: specialized cells that similar in structure group together to form tissues.
4 types?
- Epithelial: lines and protects
tissues - Connective: bind tissues together
- Muscle: allow movement
- Nervous: allow communication
