plants Flashcards
(14 cards)
2 plant organ systems?
ROOTS AND SHOOTS!
roots
everything underground.
anchors the plant, collects and
transport water and nutrients from the soil, and stores food
shoots
everything over ground
stem
transports water, minerals, and
nutrients throughout the plant;
supports the leaves and flowers
what does a leaf do
photosynthesis
and gas exchange
flower/fruit
sex
meristematic cells
plant stem cells on tips
4 types or plant tissue
- Meristematic tissue: unspecialized tissue that is
responsible for growing new parts of the plant - Epidermal tissue: forms the protective covering; allows exchange of materials and gases
- Vascular tissue: transports substances throughout the plant
- Ground tissue: provides strength and support in the
stem, stores food and water in the roots, location of
photosynthesis in leaves
Stomata
structures that open and close to allow CO2, water vapour, and oxygen to move in/out of the leaf
made by guard cell
gas exchange
root hairs and stomata
Mesophyll
-high # of chloroplasts
-sandwhiched in epidermal
ground tissue for photosynthesis
xylem
one-way transportation of water
and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant
phloem
two-way transportation of water
and nutrients (such as glucose) from the photosynthetic parts of the plant to all cells
Turgor pressure
pressure exertedwhen the cell membrane pushes against
the cell wall.
● Low water → central vacuole shrinks →decreased turgor pressure → plant wilts
● The cell wall needs to be strong so that cells don’t burst with too much turgor pressure
