Cell Devision Flashcards
Cell plate
The precursor of a new plant cell wall that forms during cell division and divides a cell into two.
Cytokinesis
The process following mitosis in which 2 daughter cells form from a parent cell.
Prophase
First stage of mitosis and meiosis in cell division
Metaphase
One of the stages in mitosis and meiosis, during which all of the chromosomes move the the cells middle.
Anaphase
Phase of mitosis and meiosis in which the chromosomes separate
Telophase
Final stage of mitosis or meiosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around each set of new chromosomes
Cleavage furrow
In cell biology, the cleavage furrow is the indentation of the cell’s surface that begins the progression of cleavage, by which animal and some algal cells undergo cytokinesis, the final splitting of the membrane, in the process cell division.
Multipotent stem cells
Cell potency is a general term which describes a stem cell’s ability to differentiate into different cell types. The more cell types a stem cell can differentiate into, the greater its potency
Totipotent
Stem cell capable of differentiating into all types of specialized cells
Pluripotent
Stem cell capable of differentiating into most types of specialized cells
Stem cells
Undifferentiated cells that have the ability to produce a variety of types of specialized cells.
Spindle
Slender mass of microtubules formed when the cell divides.
Centromeres
Constricted region of DNA, usually at the center of the duplicated chromosome, where two sister chromatids are joined.
Centrioles
Pair of small organelles found near the nucleus of the cell and that help organize the system of tubules and filaments that move chromosomes
Kinetochore
Another term for centromere
