Cell structure in prokaryotics Flashcards
What are the similarities between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Both have:
DNA, cytoplasm, plasma membrane, ribosomes
What are the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes with the DNA?
Prokaryotes have their DNA in as being free or in plasmids, but eukaryotes have it in the nucleus
Which out of prokaryotes and eukaryotes has a bigger ribosome?
Eukaryotes have more complex and bigger ribosomes
Which came first, prokaryotes or eukaryotes and why?
Prokaryotes, there is evidence of eukaryotes having organelles that are similar to prokaryotes
What are plasmids?
Circular loops of DNA
What are pili?
Small hair-like structures that allow bacteria to stick each other and host cells as well as allowing for the transfering of plasmids
What is the capsule?
A waxy protective structure
What is the flagella and their function?
A long whip-like structure that allows bacteria to move
What is the cell wall made out of?
peptidoglycan
What is the function of the cell wall?
Protect cell and help with cells shape, structure and strength
What is the sex pili?
It is a flagella that connects to another cell to transfer DNA to the other cell
