Cells Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is a person made up of
millions of cells joined together
what do cells have inside them
they have smaller structures called components that each have an important function
Name the plant cell components and what they do
Cell wall - provides structure and support for the cell
Vacuole - large sugar filled space helping to maintain cell structure
Chloroplast - perform photosynthesis to make food.
Name the animal cell components and what they do
Nucleus - contains DNA and controls cell activities
Cytoplasm - jelly like fluid where cell processes occur
Cell membrane - controls the movement of substances in and out of a cell
mitochondria - produces energy for the cell
Animal cells also have all the plant cell components so they also have: a cell wall, chloroplasts and a vacoule
what do specialised cells have
special features that allow them to do a specific job or function
what can cells only be seen under
microscope
why does the specimen need to be thin
what can be added to make an object easier to see
so light can pass through it
a dye can be added
name some of the features of a microscope (at least 5)
nose piece, eye piece, objective lens, stage, lamp, fine focus knob, coarse adjustment knob, condenser lens
State the 6 steps of using a microscope
- move the stage to its lowest positions
- place the slide/object on the stage
- choose the objective lens with the lowest magnification
- look through the eyepiece and turn the coarse focus knob slowly until you see the object
- turn the fine focus knob until it comes into focus
- repeat steps 1-5 using a higher magnification lens
finish the sentence…
particles move in and out of cells by
diffusion
what happens during diffusion
particles spread out from where they are in high concentration to where they are in low concentration
what is diffusion in water called
osmosis
what moves blood into cells by diffusion
glucose and oxygen
what moves blood out of cells by diffusion
carbon dioxide
what is an unicellular organism
only consists of one cell. They have no fixed shape and are adapted to carry out many different functions
amoeba - give at least 3 things about what they do
- nucleus controls growth and reproduction
- move by moving part of their body and the rest follows slowly in the same direction
- ear bacteria, algae and plant cells by engulfing them
- reproduce by splitting in half (binary fission)
euglena- give at least 3 things about what they do
- microscopic organism found in fresh water
- contain chloroplasts and make their own food by photosynthesis
- eye spot that detects light
- flagellum allows euglena to move towards the light to make food
amoeba
A tiny living thing with no fixed shape
cell
the basic unit of life
cell membrane
A thin layer around the cell that controls what goes in and out
cell wall
A stiff layer outside the cell membrane (plants only)
chloroplasts
Part of a plant cell that does photosynthesis
concentration
How much of something is in a certain space
cytoplasm
jelly like fluid inside a cell
