What is a galaxy
a galaxy is a connection of billions of stars. the earth is in the milky way galaxy
What are planets
planets are large objects that orbit stars and do not produce light
what are asteroids
asteroids are rocky objects smaller than planets, that also orbit stars
What are sattelites
satellites are objects that orbit planets. this includes natural satellites (moons) and artificial satellites (e.g. the international space station
What is a meteor
meteors are bits of rock which brun up in the earths atmosphere. They are called meterorides once they hit the ground.
Where is the only planet that we have found life on in the universe
Earth
How long does it take for earth to orbit the sun and how do the leap years work?
It takes a year for the earth to orbit the sun - 365.2442 days. We add one day every fourth year ( a leap year) because of the extra 0.2442 days.
What degrees is the earths axis tilted at and what does this cause
23.4 degrees
it causes seasons which have different lengths and temperatures
What does our solar system include
Inner planets - the terrestrial (rocky) planets
Mercury, Venus, earth, mars
Outer planets - the gas giants
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Asteroid belt - including the dwarf planet Ceres
Kuiper belt objects (such as pluto)
Comets (balls of ice)
How does the planets distance from the sun effects its temperature
The further the planet from the sun, the colder its temperature is (apart from Venus, because of its thick atmosphere)
Define exoplanet
is a planet that is orbiting a star that is not the sun
Learn this phrase
gravity pulled gas and dust together to form the Sun about 5 billion years ago. The planets then formed from a spinning disc of gas and dust around the sun.
Explain the amount of time the moon takes to orbit the earth
The moon orbits the earth every 27 days and 7 hours. It takes the same amount of time to spin on its axis so we always see the same side.
Describe the phases of the moon
As the moon moves around the earth different parts are lit by the sun so it looks different to us
Phases of the moon names and order: new, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full, gibbous, third quarter, crescent
Describe what happens during a solar eclipse
The moon block light hitting part of the earth. The umbra is the region of total darkness (like night) and the penumbra is where light is partially blocked
What is a lunar eclipse
the earth tops light hitting the moon
Define artificial satellite
A man-made object that orbits Earth or another planet.
Define asteroid
A small rocky object that orbits the Sun, mostly found between Mars and Jupiter.
Define axis
An invisible line a planet spins around.
Define comet
A ball of ice and dust that orbits the Sun and has a tail when near it.
Define dwarf planet
A small planet-like object that orbits the Sun but doesn’t clear its path.
Define exoplanet
A planet outside our Solar System.
Define galaxy
A huge group of stars, dust, and gas held together by gravity.
Define gravity
a force that pulls things towards eachother
