Cells and Organelles Flashcards
(11 cards)
what are ribosomes?
tiny organelles where protein synthesis occurs
what is the cytoplasm?
a jelly like material that contains dissolved nutrients, salts and organelles. it is where many chemical reactions take place.
what is the cell membrane?
a structure on the outside of the cell, which is permeable to some substances, controlling the movement of substances in/out of the cell
what is the nucleus?
It contains genetic material (RNA or DNA) which controls the cell
what is the mitochondria?
the organelle that contains the enzymes for aerobic respiration
what is the chloroplast?
an organelle that contains the green pigment, chlorophyll, that absorbs light for photosynthesis, and contains enzymes for photosynthesis.
what is the cell wall?
a turgid structure made from cellulose fibres which strengthen the cell and supports the plant.
what is the permanent vacuole?
a part of the cell filled with cell sap to help keep the cell turgid.
what is a cell?
the basic building blocks of all living organisms
what is a tissue?
a group of cells with a similar structure and function
what is an organ?
a group of tissues performing a specific function
