Heart, Blood and Lungs Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the 4 components of blood?
Platelets, Plasma, Red blood cells, and white blood cells
What does plasma carry as well as the components of blood?
Urea, Carbon dioxide, Hormones, and glucose
How many blood cells are there within a millilitre^2 of blood?
5 million red blood cells
What shape are red blood cells and why?
They are biconcave because that shape offers a higher surface area to volume ratio
What is the main component found in red blood cells?
Haemoglobin
What do white blood cells produce?
Lymphocytes and Phagocytes
Where are the cells that control the heart rate found?
In the sinus node
Where is the sinus node found?
In the right atrium
What are the capillaries that link the blood vessels in the heart?
The coronary arteries
Describe the features of an artery
Thick walls
Small lumen
Thick layer of muscles and elastic fibres
Describe the features of a vein
Large lumen
Thin walls
Thin layer of muscle and elastic fibres
Valves
Describe the features of a capillary
Very small lumen
One cell thick walls
What do red blood cells do?
They transport oxygen around the body
What are veins?
Blood vessels that carry blood to the heart
What are capillaries?
Blood vessels involved in the exchange of materials at the tissues
What are arteries?
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
What gets transferred out of the blood during gas exchange?
Carbon dioxide
