How long does a Third-Class Medical Certificate Last?
Private pilots and student pilots when acting as pilot in command must hold at least a third-class medical. For pilots under the age of 40, the certificate must be renewed every 60 months after the date of the exam.
For pilots 40 years or older, the certificate must be renewed every 24 months.
BasicMed
A pilot can receive just one AME medical examination at the start of their flight training to receive a 3rd class certificate and then maintain currency by using the simplified methods of BasicMed. A pilot can not get a BasicMed certificate without getting a 3rd class medical and the pilot must have a valid US driver’s license to qualify. BasicMed can not be used for privileges of a 1st or 2nd class medical.
Pilot can visit their primary care physician for a Comprehensive Medical Examination at least once every 48 calendar months and provide an FAA checklist to go through and be filled out during the visit.
The pilot must complete an online training course and receive a certificate of completion on aeromedical factors every 24 calendar months. The pilot must log the completion of the course in their log book.
Pilots using BasicMed are limited to what limitations?
The pilot may not fly with more than 6 passengers.
The aircraft being operated by the pilot must be limited to 7 seats, and certified for less than 12,500 lbs max takeoff weight.
The pilot may not fly at or above 18,000 ft MSL
The pilot may not fly faster than 250 knots
Pilots are not required to carry the medical exam checklist or the medical education course completion while you fly; however, you must store and keep a legible copy of these documents in your logbook, as long as you can produce an accurate and legible representation of the documents at the request of the FAA.
