What is a User interface (shell)?
software that allows communication between user and software
What is a Command - line interface (CLI)?
text - based interface, such as MS - DOS
The original IBM PC used MS - DOS with a text-based command line interface that shows a command prompt when the user inputs text commands to tell the computer what to do.
The command line interface is still the native interface for Unix and Linux and but users can also use a graphical shell.
Windows users see a graphical interface by default but can also use command line interface.
What is a major function of the operating system?
Configuring and controlling computer components and attached devices such as printer, monitor or mouse.
Why are software drivers needed?
Each device speaks its own language, so the operating system uses a software driver to communicate with it.
What is a driver?
a program that translates commands between operating system and device
