Chapter 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
(24 cards)
When you group information using your different sense
Observation
The information that scientists gather together from observations and experiments
Data
A guess made from information that you already know
Inference
A statement that is made, that may be the answer to the observations that had been made
Hypothesis
A guess made that could have been the answer to if life could be brought out of an object that is not alive
Spontaneous generation
Changing one of the variables in the experiment, to see what would happen, while all of the other variables remain the same
Controlled experiment
(Independent Variable) A variable that a scientists changes in the middle of his experiment
Manipulated variable
( Dependent Variable) A variable that a scientist would like to learn more about by using one of their senses, but could change because of the Independent variable
Responding variable
An idea that was tested by multiple scientists, multiple times
Theory
A subject that has a lot of knowledge on the world around us
Biology
Necessity to all living things and makes up all of living things. A gathering of living material that is surrounded and protected by a wall that keeps it away from other things
Cell
When a cell reproduces on its own
Asexual reproduction
When two cells from different roots come together and create a new living being
Sexual reproduction
When a living being creates or destroys material throughout its life, due to chemical reactions
Metabolism
An alert to a living being, that they will answer to
Stimulus
When living things are able to stay balanced, internally
Homeostasis
When a living being slowly changes over a long span of time; when old living beings are not what they are now
Evolution
A type of measurement not used in the United States, and that is measured on multiples of ten
Metric system
A tool that makes an image large enough to see, that can’t be seen with the naked eye
Microscope
A tool that lets light come through a bodily fluid and uses two lenses to create a picture
Compound light microscope
A tool that uses settles on beams of electrons onto a bodily fluid
Electron microscope
Cells that have grown in a healthy chemical to one single cell
Cell culture
When cells are split into chunks and all of the parts of the cell are moved away from each other
Cell fractionation
A way that scientist shows information about the world around us
