Chapter 4 Vocabulary Flashcards
(46 cards)
Year after year conditions of the weather, and it’s temperature
Climate
Predicament when heat is kept on the earth by carbon dioxide, methane, water sports, and other gases
Greenhouse effect
At a cold place on earth, where the sun beats down very lightly on the earths surface
Polar zone
Medium temperature areas between the polar zones, and the tropics
Temperate zone
Warm temperature that gets most-to-all sunlight all year
Tropical zone
Living influence on organisms that live in an ecosystem
Biotic factor
Factors that forms an ecosystem; living or non-living
Abiotic factor
General area in which an organism thrives, which includes abiotic and biotic factors
Habitat
Complete range of physical and biological conditions that an organism thrives in and the way that the organism uses the conditions
Niche
A need for a living thing; water, nutrients, light, food, and space
Resource
The ecological rule that two species that are alike can not be in the same habitat at the same time
Competitive Exclusion Principal
Communication when one organism catches and eats the other organism
Predation
Relationship when two species live in a compact area
Symbiosis
Symbiotic relationship when both organisms are favored from the relationship
Mutualism
Symbiotic relationship when one affiliate of the affiliation benefits, and the other is not harmed or helped
Commensalism
Symbiotic relationship when one organism thrives in or on another organism and can harm it
Parasitism
Steady change in living communities that goes along with a disturbance
Ecological Succession
Succession that occurs when there is no soil
Primary Succession
The first species to make a certain place home, and to reproduce in, during primary succession
Pioneer species
Succession that comes after a disturbance that ruins a community without ruining the soil
Secondary succession
Condition of the earth during certain seasons
Weather
accumulation of ecosystems that have comparable climate and dominant communities
Biome
temperature in a little area that compares greatly from the temperature of the area around it
Microclimate
Covering in a rain forest made by smaller trees and vine
Understory
