Corrupt bargain
Policy of rewarding political supporters with public office. First employed by Andrew Jackson. Abused by office seekers, helped cement party loyalty in 2-party system
Spoils system
- South opposed saying it hurt southern farmers who didn’t like protection of tariffs but were forced to pay higher prices for manufactures
Tariff of abominations
1832-1833. Showdown between president andrew Jackson and South Carolina legislature which said 1823 tariff null and void/threatened succession if the federal gov tried to collect duties
Nullification crisis
Passed as a measure to resolve the nullification crisis. Provided tariffs be lowered gradually
Compromise tariff of 1833
1833 passed by congress alongside compromise tariff. Authorized the president to use military to collect federal tariff duties.
Force bill
1830, ordered removal of Indian tribes still residing east of Mississippi to new Indian territory west of Arkansas and Missouri. Tribes resisting eviction were forcibly removed.
Indian removal act
1838-1839, forced march of 15,000 Cherokee Indians from their Georgia/Alabama homes to Indian territory. Lots of Cherokee died on journey
Trial of tears
1832- battle between president Andrew Jackson and congressional supporters of the bank of the US over banks renewal in 1832. Jackson vetoed bill- saying bank favored moneyed interests at the expense of western farmers
Bank war
Term for pro-Jackson state banks that received bank of federal deposits when Andrew Jackson moved to dismantle the bank of US in 1835
Pet Banks
1836, US treasury decree requiring that all public lands be purchased with metallic/hard currency. Issued after small state banks flooded the market with un reliable paper currency
Specie circular
Economic crisis triggered by bank failures, elevated grain prices and Andrew Jackson efforts to curb oversreuction on western lands and transportation improvements
Panic of 1837
Fortress in Texas. 400 American volunteers were slain by Santa Anna in 1836. “Remember the Alamo” (battle cry for Texas independence)
