Chapter 19 Flashcards
(45 cards)
pulse
arterial palpatation of the heart beat of left ventricle
varicose veins
tortuous, dilated veins due to incompetent valves
hemorrhoids
varicosity of the veins in the anal canal and/or perineum
vasoconstriction
contraction of the tunica media that causes the vessel diameter to close
vasodilation
relaxation of the tunica media that causes the vessel diameter to widen
vasomotor center
- brain center that oversees changes in vessel diameter in response to sensory info from barorecepters
- vasoconstriction will increase BP, vasodilation will decrease BP
orthostatic hypotension
- drop in BP after a position change due to an aging sympathetic NS
- seen most often in the elderly
NO
(nitrous oxide) released by endothelial cells in response to trauma, causes vasodilation
phlebotomy
venous incision for the purpose of withdrawing blood
hypotension
below 90/60; chronic low BP
hypertension
above 140/90; chronic high BP
vital signs
BP, pulse, respiration, and temperature
sphygmomanometer
BP cup; measures BP
angiography
infusion of radiopaque substance into circulation which lights up during an X-ray giving a visual of circulation in a certain area
hypovolemic shock
- loss of blood volume due to hemorrhage, diarrhea, vomiting, burns, etc
- signs: increased breathing, HR, thirst, cold and clammy skin, decreased urine production, restlessness, coma
vascular shock
- normal blood volume w/ extreme vessel dilation
- can occur in an allergic reaction, sunbathing and falling asleep, etc
internal carotids
- arise from the brachiocephalic trunk
- common carotid splits into external and internal carotids; -supplies the orbits and 80% of the cerebrum
shock
any condition where vessels are inadequately filled w/ oxygenated blood
circle of Willis
- 2 posterior and 2 anterior arteries that encircle the pituitary gland
- equalizes the blood pressure in the two hemispheres
radial artery
supplies the arm, thumb; site of radial pulse
superior mesenteric artery
large abdominal artery; feed large and small intestine
dorsalis pedis artery
supplies ankle and dorsum of foot
median cubital vein
drains the anterior elbow
dural sinuses
drains veins of brain
