Chapter 26 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is plasma
Fluid portion of the blood
Non electrolytes
Most are organic molecules
Do not dissociate in water
Electrolytes
Dissociate into ions when placed in water
Have greater osmatic power
Osmolality
Indicates the number of solutes in a kilogram of water
Hypotonic hydration
Occurs if kidney function is insufficient or if a individual ingests excessive amounts of water at a time
Edema
Accumulation of water in interstitial fluid only resulting in tissue swelling
If blood pressure is high what does that tell you about blood volume
It’s high
What is the normal PH range
7.35-7.45
When do Alkosis and alkalemia occur
I’d the PH is lower then its normal range
When does acidosis and acidemia occur
If the PH is above normal range
What is a chemical buffer system
Resist large changes in ph value when a strong acid or base is present
Bicarbonate buffer system
If a strong acid is introduced to body fluid the free H+ will be tied up to prevent large shift in the Ph
Respiratory acidosis and alkalosis
Caused by failure of respiratory system to preform PH balancing role
Metabolic acidosis and alkalosis
Caused by failure of organ system other than the respiratory system
The normal PCO2 level is
35-45
The normal HCO3- level is
22-26
