Chapter 5 Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are the two distinct regions the skin consists of?
Epidermis and dermis
Epidermis
superficial region that consists of epithelial tissue
Dermis
underlies epidermis and made up of mostly fibrous connective tissue
Hypodermis
also called the superficial fascia
subcutaneus layer deep to skin
mostly adipose tissue
what are 4 types of cells found in the epidermis
karatinocytes, melanocytes, tactile cells and dendrtic cells
stratum basale
one row of stem cells that divide mitosis
dendritic cells
will present foreign substances to the immune system
what makes up the dermis
strong flexible connectve tissue
cells including fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells and white blood cells
fibers in matrix bind body together
contains nerves, blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
contains epidermal hair follicles, oil glands and sweat glands
Planter skin
thicker
ex) feet
can withhold mechanical stress
sensible perspiration
water is excreted by sweat glands
insensible perspiration
loss of IF va evaporation
how does the integumentary system respond to a cold external enviroment
dermal blood vessels contrict
skin temperature drops to slow passive heat loss
what are the 6 functions of the integumentary system
protection, body temerpature regulation, cutaneous sensations, metebolic functions, blood resivoir, excretion of salt, water and urea
1st degree burn
a burn that goes through the thickness of the epidermis
2nd degree burn
a burn that goes through the epidermis and the upper portion of the dermis
3rd degree burn
the most severe
burn that goes through the entire thickness of skin which includes the epidermis and all of the dermis
fibroblasts
produce collagen fibers that pull ends of wound together
what specific cells of the epidermis actively divide replacing injured cells of the epidermis
stem cells
Where are stem cells located
stratum basale
what are 3 cells of the dermis that would be active during tissue repair
fibroblasts mast cells and macrophages
