Chapter 4 Flashcards
(9 cards)
Organic chemistry
Compound containing carbon are called organic and their chemistry is known as organic chemistry
Where does organic compounds exist
We’re once thought to arise only within living organisms but now can be synthesised in labs.
Characteristics of carbon atom
- has valance of 4
- can bond with various other atoms including O,H and N. Carbon also bonds to other carbon atom, forming the carbon skeleton of oraganic comping
Hydrocarbon
Consist of hydrogen and oxygen only
Isomer
Compound that have same molecular formula but different structure and therefore different properties
What different type of isomers
- structural isomer
- CIS-trans isomer(geometric isomers)
- enantiomers(mirror image isomers)
Which chemical group reacts in organic chemistry
Chemical group attached to carbon skeleton of organic molecules participate in chemical reaction (functional group)
ATP(adenosine triphosphate)
Consist of adenosine attached to three phosphate groups. ATP can react with water forming inorganic phosphate and ADP(adenosine diphosphate). This reaction releases end
Energy that can be used by cell
List dome chemical groups
-hydroxyl (-OH)
-Carbonyl (>C=0)
Carboxyl (>c=ooh
-amino acid (-N
