What is needs and motivations?
Needs are generally understood as requirements to live a fulfilling and healthy life. It can be seen as a
deficit, something people do not have
Motivation for using a particular system is related to which needs we anticipate these particular
systems will fulfill
Needs are universal, in contrast, motives are individual
Name some basic psychological needs
Relatedness:
Need for social relationships
Meaning:
Need for purpose and direction
Stimulation:
Need for novel sensations and thoughts
Competence:
Need for ability to perform well in important activities
Popularity:
Need for recognition by others
Security:
Need for protection of self from harm
Briefly explain the self-determination theory
The idea of people as active organisms pursuing self-growth, mastery, and fulfillment
- Autonomy:
The sense that actions are performed willingly, in alignment with one’s self, and not directed by external forces - Competence:
The feeling of achieving mastery and controlling the outcomes of action - Relatedness:
The sense of reciprocal belonging in relation to other humans
What is intrinsic- and extrensic motivation
Intrinsic motivation consists of activities that a person has integrated into sense of self - You do things because of the interest and enjoyment in the task itself
Extrensic motivation refers to external regulation of motivation - You do things because of the
outcomes that will result by doing the task
Explain internalization
The process of transforming an extrensic motive into personally approved activities. It is on a
continuum:
External regulation:
The rewards that are motivating are controlled by the environment
Introjected regulation:
Partially internalized motivation, but one that is not yet integrated as one’s own
Identified regulation:
The activity is consciously valued as personally important
Integrated regulation:
The activity is congruent with personally valued goals and needs that are part of
the self
