Chapter 7 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Endocrine System
Together with the nervous system, responsible for most intracellular communication
Hormone
Chemical messenger released in response to a stimulus and secreted into the blood to be carried to its target cells
How does the hormone know where to go
Messenger is going to go everywhere but only binds to the appropriate receptor
Tissues of the Endocrine System
Endocrine is more than just gland
-Heart, stomach, Ovaries, Testes
Release messengers into the blood affecting endocrine system
Amines
-Derivatives of tyrosine
-Thyroid Hormones
-Catecholamine
Thyroid Hormones
-T3 and T4
Catecholamine
Epi, NorEpi, Dopamine
Peptides
-AA chains/small peptides
-Peptide hormones cannot enter their target cells and must combine with membrane receptors that initiate signal transduction processes
Steroids
derivatives of cholesterol
-Adrenal hormones
Adrenal Hormones
-Mineralocorticoids
-Glucocorticoids
Mineralocorticoids
affect mineral metabolism
Glucocorticoids
Affects glucose metabolism
Adrenal Gland
Adrenal Medulla
Adrenal Cortex
Adrenal Medulla releases
Epinephrine and norephinephrine
Adrenal Cortex releases
Glucocorticoid, testosterone
Gonadal Hormone
Come from the gonads
