Chapter 9 pt2 Flashcards
(7 cards)
bomb calorimeter
measures heat of combustion reactions. this is done at constant volume…but, we re measuring the surroundings and applying it to the system
coffee cup calorimeter
measures heat of combustion reactions through a constant pressure
characteristics of a bomb calorimeter
- combustion reaction
- produces a gas (CO2), so work is involved
- gases can do work (expand or contract)
characteristics of a coffee cup calorimeter
- solution reactions
- since everything is in a solution, there are no gases, so no work is being done
bid difference between the coffee cup and bomb calorimeter
bomb leads you to a general deltaE, while the coffee-cup leads you to a specific deltaE
hess’s law
if a reaction can be represented as the sum of two or more reactions, its deltaHreaction then is the sum of all the deltaHreaction in the process
born haber cycle
represents how ionic molecules are made from base elements
