What history should we take of a pregnant woman? (6)
A
- Duration of pregnancy
- Age of expectant mother
- Number of deliveries
- Previous complications/deliveries
- Any known abnormalities or conditions (maternal or foetal)
- Any illnesses during pregnancy

What observations should we check for in an expectant mother? (5)
A
- BP and urine test
- Have waters broken?
- Is baby moving/kicking?
- regular, powerful contractions? (Time from one to the next)
- signs of anemia?

What are the immediate treatment aims for the mother? (3)
A
- Pain relief
- Prevent infection
- Prevent trauma

A
- Resuscitate
- Maintain body heat
- Prevent trauma

What are the treatment aims post-birth? (4)
A
- Both vital signs of mother and baby regularly checked
- Both mother and baby kept warm
- Both checked by a midwife asap
- Mother observed for excessive vaginal bleeding

What is the first stage of labour?
A
From the onset of contractions to full dilation of the cervix

What is the second stage of labour?
A
From full dilation of the cervix to complete delivery of the baby

What is the third stage of labour?
A
From the delivery of the baby to the complete expulsion of the placenta and membranes

Describe the management of post-birth care for the baby (4)
A
- Lay onto mother’s abdomen or a clean warm cloth. Do asap before placenta is delivered unless there’s a medical reason not to.
- Baby should go from blue to pink after first breaths
- Wrap in warm protective covering and hand to mother
- Encourage mother to feed baby as this can help encourage contractions to assist placental expulsion.
