Circulatory System Flashcards
Arteries Function?
Arteries Structure?
Function: Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the bodies cells.
Structure: Thick outer walls, small lumen, high pressure with the exception of the pulmonary arteries.
Veins Function?
Veins Structure?
Function: Carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart from the body.
Structure: Valves to prevent back-flow, larger lumen, low pressure and thin outer walls.
Capillaries Function?
Capillaries Structure?
Function: Connect arteries and veins, important in the role of exchanging materials between blood and cells, role in gas exchange of oxygen and CO2 within the lungs.
Structure: One cell thick allows for diffusion, very small lumen.
Components of blood?
Erythrocytes: Carry oxygen to the bodies cells using haemoglobin (red protein). Biconcave shape with no nucleus.
Leukocytes: Aid the immune system and destroy pathogens. Spherical shape and cells have a nucleus.
Platelets: Thrombocytes, clump together to form blood clots.
Plasma: Transports nutrients to cells and carries hormones and glucose in blood.
Phagocytes: Engulf and absorb bacteria and pathogens.
